A CLINICAL COMPARISON OF THE ANTICALCULUS EFFECT OF TWO KINDS OF THERAPEUTIC DENTIFRICE

Abstract
In order to evaluate the anticalculus effect of two kinds of therapeutic dentifrice, the authors had examined the calculus deposited on the lingual surfaces of four lower anterior teeth of 100 females aged twenties, who were brushing teeth with control cosmetic toothpaste and two kinds of experimental therapeutic toothpaste. The one experimental toothpaste contained 3.4% of tetrasodium; pyrophosphate, 1.37% of sodium anhydrous pyrophosphate, 0.76% of SMFP, and 0.1% of NaF with a silica abrasive, and the other experimental one 1.5% of TSPP, 4.5% of tetrapotassium pyrophosphate, 1.0% of polyvinyl methylether maleic acid, 0.76% of SMFP, and 0.1% of NaF with a silica abrasive. On the other hand, the control toothpaste contained 0.1% of NaF and 0.76% of SMFP with a 23.0% of hydrated silica.
The study was designed as a three-period repeated trial during 3 months. Marginal line calculus index was used to indicate the amount of calculus deposited at each 2 weeks and 4 weeks period. After the test teeth were professionally cleared before each two kinds of period, all the examinee were given with control and experimental toothpastes and straight handled medium bristled toothbrushes and directed. to utilize the toothpastes and toothbrushes offered for brushing teeth.
The obtained results were as follows:
1. The two kinds of therapeutic dentifrices containing soluble pyrophosphate reduced calculus
deposition.
2. The one therapeutic dentifrice containing TSPP and SAPP reduced 18.1% of calculus deposition and the other containing TSPP, TPPP and PVM/MA 38.4% of calculus deposition.
3. The dentifrice containing TSPP, TPPP and PVM/MA carried more anticaiculus effect than the other containing TSPP and SAPP.
